A treatment plan may include a combination of therapeutic techniques, including Active Release Technique (A.R.T.®), Athletic Movement Assessment (AMA®), Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, Diversified Chiropractic Technique, home exercise and rehabilitation.
We believe in a patient-centered, team-based approach to care. Your chiropractor will collaborate with other members of your healthcare team while working with you to create a plan to achieve your goals as quickly as possible!
What to Expect When Visiting a Chiropractor at GRSM in Cambridge or Kitchener?
Your first session with a chiropractor is a 60-minute comprehensive assessment, which includes a history and physical examination. Once a diagnosis is made, we will discuss your management plan, including frequency of visits and duration of therapy. We also discuss what treatments and strategies we will use to help you achieve your goals.
Follow-up visits to our Cambridge or Kitchener clinics focus on treatment, including exercises, self-care advice and education. The chiropractor will ask you questions to evaluate your progress at the start of each follow-up. Follow-up sessions are usually 30 minutes but can range from 20-45 minutes depending on the treatment techniques provided, and we discuss this before booking. We regularly re-evaluate your progress, ensuring you are on track to achieve your goals!
Techniques Offered by GRSM Chiropractors
Active Release Technique (ART®):
Active Release Technique (A.R.T.®) is a non-invasive soft-tissue and nerve treatment technique. GRSM chiropractors use this hands-on, movement-based technique in combination with other therapies in treating a variety of conditions.
Common Conditions Treated with (A.R.T.®):
- Myofascial (muscle) pain
- Tendon injury
- Ligament injury
- Nerve compression (such as carpal tunnel or sciatica)
- Headaches
- Back and neck pain
- Shin splints
- Shoulder pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Hip and knee problems
- Tennis elbow/golfers elbow
- Sprain/strains
These are just a few conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with A.R.T.®. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
Contemporary Medical/Neurofunctional Acupuncture:
This modern neuro-anatomical approach to an ancient therapy redefines its mechanisms and effects using our current scientific understanding of human physiology. It is a gentle technique using fine needles to stimulate nerves in the skin and muscles to have various effects on the body.
Contemporary Acupuncture Can:
- Inactivate myofascial trigger points (muscle knots)
- Aid tissue healing by increasing blood flow
- Help reduce muscle tension
- Help reduce pain
- Positively affect mood and emotion (an essential factor in those with chronic pain)
- Provide a strong relaxation effect
These are just a few of the many conditions treated with Contemporary Medical Acupuncture. GRSM Kitchener and Cambridge chiropractors use acupuncture to complement other techniques in treating many conditions related to the muscles, joints and nerves.
Diversified Chiropractic Technique:
An adjustment or manipulation is one of the most common treatments provided by chiropractors. There are many techniques a chiropractor can use to adjust or manipulate the various joints in the body, but the most common is Diversified Technique. Diversified adjustments are provided by hand, during which a quick controlled force is applied to a joint, guiding it through a range of motion. When applied to your spine, this treatment is called spinal manipulation therapy (SMT), but the technique can be used on nearly every joint in the body.
The Effects of an Adjustment May Include:
- Restored joint movement
- Improved function
- Reduced muscle spasm
- Pain reduction
Not every patient requires or would benefit from a chiropractic adjustment, and it would not be recommended in some cases. The decision to include chiropractic adjustments in your treatment plan would only be made after a thorough clinical assessment and discussion between you and your chiropractor. This discussion should include the benefits, risks and alternatives to adjustments and consider your personal preferences.

Chiropractors work with you to achieve your goals, whether reducing pain, getting back to work and play, improving athletic performance, or improving mobility and quality of life. Chiropractors also collaborate with other professionals as part of your healthcare team.
What are the Benefits of Seeing a Chiropractor?
- Improved movement in your neck, back, and joints
- Improved posture
- Relief from headaches
- Relief from neck and back pain
- Prevention of work-related muscle and joint injuries
- Enhanced athletic performance
- Improved flexibility
- Relief of pregnancy-related backache

What Qualifications Does a Chiropractor Have?
In Ontario, most chiropractors completed an undergraduate degree before entering the four-year accredited chiropractic program at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC). CMCC is a leader in evidence-based chiropractic education, which includes over 4500 hours of study. Students who graduate from CMCC earn a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. To practice in Ontario, graduates must then pass the licensing examinations, including written and practical portions and a legislation and ethics examination.
You can find information on any chiropractor licensed in Ontario by searching the public register at the College of Chiropractors of Ontario website
Why Should I See a Chiropractor?
Most people will decide to see a chiropractor when something starts bothering them so much that it prevents them from doing what they love or need to do for work. While this is undoubtedly a time to see the chiropractor, it is far better to come in before it gets to that point. The best strategy is to identify the problem and its causes early so we can deal with it before it stops you from enjoying your activities. You do not need to be in pain to see a chiropractor. We recommend seeing our chiropractor in our Kitchener or Cambridge clinic ahead of any major concerns or injuries if you can plan ahead. Many people see chiropractors to reduce the risk of injury and improve mobility, flexibility, and quality of life.
Is it True That Once I See a Chiropractor, I’ll Have to go Forever?
No! This is a myth. A good chiropractor will regularly evaluate your progress to ensure you are getting better. You should always know why any healthcare provider is asking you to come back in. If you are ever unsure, it is time to have that discussion with your healthcare provider!
What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a highly skilled manual procedure usually done by hand, during which a quick controlled force is applied to a joint, guiding it through a range of motion. An adjustment can reduce pain and restore or enhance joint function – so you can quickly resume your active lifestyle. An adjustment is a comfortable procedure that rarely causes discomfort. Our Kitchener and Cambridge chiropractor can adapt the procedure to meet your specific needs.
Is a Chiropractic Adjustment Safe?
Chiropractic adjustment techniques have been researched extensively. Side effects, such as temporary soreness, are rare and usually minor. We significantly reduce these risks at our Kitchener and Cambridge clinics by completing a comprehensive assessment before starting treatment and regularly re-evaluating your progress. Each case is different, and your chiropractor will discuss any risks before starting treatment. If an adjustment is not recommended, your chiropractor will offer alternative treatments or refer you to an appropriate health care provider.

Does Everyone Need an Adjustment?
No, adjustments are only considered if they will benefit your health and help you recover from your injury or condition. The decision to include adjustments in your treatment plan would only be made after a thorough clinical assessment and discussion between you and your chiropractor. This discussion should include the benefits, risks and alternatives to adjustments and consider your personal preferences. If an adjustment is not recommended or wanted, your chiropractor will offer alternative treatments or refer you to an appropriate health care provider.
What Other Treatments Can A Chiropractor Use?
Your chiropractor has many skills and techniques to help you treat your injury or condition and help you get back to what you love.
Here are some of the common chiropractic techniques, some of which our Kitchener and Cambridge chiropractor offers:
- Active Release Technique (A.R.T.®)
- Contemporary Medical Acupuncture
- Instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques (e.g. oscillatory techniques and vibration tools such as Theragun)
- Home exercise education
- Functional movement assessment and correction
Tips on Finding a Good Chiropractor?
- Consider recommendations from other members of your healthcare team. Often, your doctor, physiotherapist, or massage therapist knows a reputable chiropractor in your area.
- Consider recommendations from friends and family. If someone you trust has had a good experience with a chiropractor, that’s a good place to start, but also consider the following.
- Is the chiropractor licensed to practice in Ontario and in good standing?
- A sensible chiropractor will take time to listen, complete a thorough assessment and give you a diagnosis. Otherwise, it is impossible to know if it is appropriate and safe to proceed with treatment.
- A thorough chiropractor will discuss recommended treatment options, including benefits, risks, alternatives, and expected results.
- A trustworthy chiropractor considers your preferences and comfort when recommending a course of treatment. You must be comfortable with your care!
- A skilled chiropractor will regularly re-evaluate your progress and change your treatment plan as needed. They should not do the same things every visit if you have a new issue or your condition has changed.
- How was your experience during the first visit? Consider not just the chiropractor but also the administrative staff, cleanliness of the facility, access to parking, direct billing, and online booking.
- Always ask questions! A friendly chiropractor looks forward to engaging with their patients.
Contemporary Medical/Neurofunctional Acupuncture
What is Contemporary Medical Acupuncture?
This modern neuro-anatomical approach to an ancient therapy redefines its mechanisms and effects using our current scientific understanding of human physiology. It is a gentle technique using fine needles inserted into various points in the body to stimulate chemical release in the brain, spinal cord and muscles. These chemicals can change the experience of pain and influence the body’s internal regulating system, promoting natural healing and well-being.
In some cases, a gentle electrical stimulation is added to one or more needles to strengthen the effect on the nervous system. Adding electrical stimulation often improves the reduction of pain and tension in the muscles.
Contemporary Acupuncture Can:
- Inactivate myofascial trigger points (muscle knots)
- Aid tissue healing by increasing blood flow
- Help reduce muscle tension
- Help reduce pain
- Positively affect mood and emotion (an essential factor in those with chronic pain)
Provide a strong relaxation effect.
GRSM Kitchener and Cambridge Chiropractors use acupuncture to complement other techniques in treating many conditions related to the muscles, joints and nerves. The following are just a few of the many conditions treated with Contemporary acupuncture.
Common Conditions Treated With Contemporary Acupuncture:
- Neck and back pain
- Tennis elbow/golfers elbow
- Plantar fasciitis
- Shoulder pain
- Hip and knee pain
Jaw (TMJ) pain
- Chronic pain
- Myofascial trigger points (muscle knots)
- Myofascial pain and tension
- Headaches
- Osteoarthritis pain
Does Chiropractic Acupuncture Hurt?
Acupuncture requires very fine, solid, stainless-steel needles. When performed by a skilled practitioner, the small size often allows needles to be inserted without pain. Injured tissues, however, can be sensitive, and some discomfort may result. If any pain or discomfort is experienced during acupuncture, your chiropractor will remove the needle and, with permission, try again. Often, moving the needle location slightly will resolve any discomfort.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is considered a safe treatment intervention. Potential side effects are rare and discussed before starting treatment. Only sterile, single-use needles are used in our Cambridge and Kitchener clinics.
How Are Chiropractors Trained to Provide Acupuncture?
In Ontario, licensed Chiropractors can provide acupuncture treatment within their scope of practice. However, it is not part of the core curriculum in Chiropractic colleges and, therefore, requires further training and certification.
Chiropractors at GRSM received their training through the McMaster Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program. The program includes lectures, a detailed anatomical review in the McMaster cadaver lab, needling and skills workshops, safety techniques, and live case studies. The program is accredited by the McMaster Health Services Continuing Education Department with a Certificate of 300 hours of Continuing Medical Education.
